How to register an NTN in Pakistan, step by step
Your NTN (National Tax Number) is your identity with the FBR — you need it to file returns, register for sales tax, open certain business accounts and stay on the Active Taxpayer List. The good news: for most individuals it’s free and quick.
Who needs an NTN
Any individual with taxable income, anyone wanting to become a filer, and every business (sole proprietor, AOP or company) dealing with the FBR. If you invoice clients, claim the lower filer tax rates, or plan to register for sales tax, an NTN is the first step.
What to keep ready
- Your CNIC (and the mobile number registered against it on your own CNIC)
- A personal email address
- Your residential address
- For a business: the business name, nature of activity and business address
- A recent utility bill or proof of premises (for businesses)
The steps
- Enrol on the FBR IRIS portal and complete Form 181 (registration)
- Verify your mobile and email with the one-time codes FBR sends
- Enter your personal and (if applicable) business details
- Submit — for salaried individuals the NTN is often issued the same day
How long it takes
A straightforward individual NTN is frequently issued within a day. Business registrations can take a little longer if FBR asks for additional verification. Akountmate prepares and files the whole thing for you — you just share your CNIC and confirm the details.
Note: tax rules and rates change with each Finance Act, and your situation may differ. This is general guidance, not formal tax advice — Akountmate confirms the exact figures and sections for your business before anything is filed.
